Wasps

If you’re like most people, the answer to these questions is a mystery to you: Do wasps hibernate? Where do they go in winter? What do they do when it’s cold outside?

In this blog post, we will answer all of these questions and more! We will also provide tips on how to get rid of wasps during the winter months. Knowledge is power in pest control, so read on and learn all you can.

One place wasps may go in the winter is inside your home. They can enter through cracks and crevices around doors and windows. Once inside, they will build their nests in dark, secluded areas. If you have wasps in your home, you will likely see them flying around near windows or doors.

When winter comes, most wasps will die off. However, a few species of wasps can survive the cold weather. These wasps will find a place to hibernate until spring arrives. Some of the places where wasps go in winter include:

  • Underneath porches
  • In cracks and crevices in buildings
  • In trees and shrubs
  • Garages and sheds
  • In attics and crawl spaces
  • In wall voids

If you find wasps in any of these places, you can get rid of them using a vacuum cleaner with a hose attachment. Vacuum up the wasps and dispose of them outside. You can also use an insecticide. If you find a wasp nest on your property, getting rid of it as soon as possible is essential. Otherwise, the wasps will continue to reproduce, and you will have an even bigger problem on your hands.

The 3 Worst Pest Infestations

March 29, 2021

Few things in life are as frustrating as finding out that you have pests in your home. What’s worse is when it’s not just one or two stray bees or mosquitos, but when you have a full-on infestation. Don’t get us wrong, all infestations are bad, but let’s take a look at what we think the worst types of pest infestations are.

TERMITES

If you are not careful, termites can wreak serious havoc on your home. Infestations grow rapidly, and many homeowners are oblivious to the signs of wood damage around them. They enter the home from the outside and burrow their way in through wood compromising the structural integrity. Once they’re inside they begin to eat away at the wood of the home. They can do serious damage to everything from sheathing, rafters, joists, and studs. The United States Department of Agriculture estimates that U.S. residents spend at least $1 billion a year on termite control and repairs every year, earning them the title of the most destructive wood pest in the U.S.

WASPS

Nothing quite puts a picnic or playtime on high alert like discovering a wasp in the area. Now multiply that by two thousand when you find a hive of wasps. Wasps are often considered one of the worst types of pests for several reasons. First, they are very territorial. And because they build their nests into existing sheltered areas such as eaves, gutters, and chimneys, you might not see them until it’s too late. Wasps are also prone to attack humans, especially before and after their breeding season, which is in the spring. And unlike bees, who have a barbed stinger, wasps’ stingers aren’t left behind after stinging you, so they can sting you multiple times without dying.

BED BUGS

While bed bugs aren’t the largest or most dangerous of pests, they are often considered one of the worst to have in your home. These little bugs are brought into the house by the owner. They cling to packages and bags that came into contact with other infested areas. Typically when it’s dark they find themselves a new hiding place closer to a food source. What do they like to eat? You guessed it, you! Bed bugs survive on human blood. Once they make their new house a home, they start reproducing. Most people don’t know they have bed bugs until they’ve been turned into a bed bug buffet. The bites are usually painless at first, but eventually, can turn into tiny itchy welts.

While pests can cause a lot of property and physical damage, perhaps the worst part of an infestation is the toll they can take mentally on a homeowner. The fear and anxiety of having ANY pest inside your home is stress that nobody should have to live with. If you realize you have a growing pest problem, the best thing you can do is act fast. They will not leave until you seek professional help!

Wasp Infestation Tips & Tricks

November 25, 2020

Wasps are common pests in warm climates. They can be painful with their sting and a severe threat to those with allergies. An infestation is the last thing you want for your home or business. Learning precautionary tips can help you keep you, your family, and your business safe from wasp infestation. Read below to learn a few ways you can conquer and control these pests from taking over.

How to Avoid Wasp Infestations

A wasp sting can cause multiple reactions like swelling, irritation, soreness, hives, and life-threatening symptoms, such as not being able to breathe. Unfortunately, they can sting more than once, unlike bees. However, wasps usually won’t sting unless they’re provoked. All in all, we need wasps for the pollination process, so next time a wasp lands on you, gently blow on it instead of swatting or freaking out to avoid a sting. Avoiding a sting isn’t the same as preventing infestation. It only takes one wasp for a whole swarm to start taking over.

  • Where to Look: If you have your suspicions that there’s a wasp nest somewhere in your home, there are few places you should check first. Look in outdoor covered areas, like grilles, sheds, tree branches, porch ceilings, and under porch decks. Some indoor areas to check include attics, inside windows between the screens, and other crawl spaces in your home.
  • How to Avoid: An easy way to avoid wasps is to hide sugary foods. For example, if you’re cooking outside with some friends, try to avoid leaving out food or covering unattended food. Another dependable way to prevent a wasp infestation is to cover all holes that could lead inside your home. Whether it’s the screen door or a small hole in the attic, you don’t want an infestation inside your house.
  • Plant a Garden: As stated above, wasps pollinate too! Planting a garden far away from your home can attract them to a new source other than your garbage. Planting a garden is good for the environment and a great pest control tactic.
  • When to Call Pest Control: A giant wasp nest should not be taken on by one person, even if you’re not allergic. If wasps see their queen in danger, there will be a price to pay, and it will be painful with multiple stings. If you notice a nest anywhere near or in your home, call your pest control experts today!
